Flexible Body of Louisville!
Myofascial Release is a gentle hands-on technique which provides sustained pressure into fascial restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.
Fascia (also called connective tissue) is a densely woven covering that extends without interruption like a three-dimensional spider web from the top of the head to the tip of the toes. It surrounds muscles, organs, nerves, and bones. The entire body is connected to every other part of the body by the fascia and needs to be treated with a whole body approach and not each part in isolation.
A fascial barrier is a restriction in the connective tissue. Injury, physical and emotional trauma, and poor posture can cause these fascial fibers to tighten, shorten, thicken and adhere. The tension in the fascia puts abnormal pressure on nerves, muscles, bones, organs, and the brain. The result is pain, loss of range of motion and structural misalignment.
As the therapist releases the fascial restrictions, greater flexibility and range of motion are achieved. This results in decreased pain, and ease of movement. The release may feel like taffy lengthening, or butter melting. There may be a tingling, pulsing or release of heat. Often the tension or sensations may intensify as the release is occurring and then decrease or disappear when it is complete. You may feel the fascial connection into other areas of the body letting you know the relationship between the restriction and where you feel the referred sensation.
